How California paycheck taxes work
California uses a progressive state income tax with 10 brackets, from 1% on the first $10,412 of taxable income to 13.3% on income over $1 million. In addition, most wage earners pay State Disability Insurance (SDI) at 1.1% on wages up to the wage base. Your employer withholds state tax and SDI from each paycheck based on your W-4 and DE 4 withholding forms.
