Why Standard Math Does Not Work for Time Calculations

You cannot add time the same way you add regular numbers. Time uses base-60 (minutes and seconds) not base-10. Adding 2 hours 45 minutes + 1 hour 30 minutes does not equal 3 hours 75 minutes — it equals 4 hours 15 minutes. For payroll calculations, this matters: 8 hours 37 minutes is not 8.37 hours (that would be 8 hours and 22 minutes). It is 8.617 hours (37 / 60 = 0.617). Multiply by hourly rate using decimal hours, not the raw minutes figure.

How to Use the Time Calculator

Select the operation — add time, subtract time, or find duration between two specific times (start time and end time). Enter hours, minutes, and seconds. For payroll use, enter clock-in and clock-out times and the calculator shows total hours worked in both HH:MM format and decimal hours. Overnight durations (clock-in at 10 PM, clock-out at 6 AM) are handled automatically. Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate for payroll calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your start time (clock-in) and end time (clock-out). Subtract any unpaid break time. Convert the result to decimal hours: divide minutes by 60. Example: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + (45/60) = 7.75 decimal hours. Multiply 7.75 × $18/hour = $139.50 pay for that shift.
Divide minutes by 60. Common conversions: 15 min = 0.25 hrs, 20 min = 0.33 hrs, 30 min = 0.5 hrs, 45 min = 0.75 hrs, 40 min = 0.67 hrs, 50 min = 0.83 hrs. Multiply decimal hours by hourly wage for exact pay per shift.
For an overnight shift from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM: add 24 hours to the end time (6:30 AM + 24 = 30:30), then subtract start time (30:30 − 22:00 = 8:30). Total shift = 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 decimal hours. Our calculator handles this automatically.
Add the hours, add the minutes separately, then convert excess minutes to hours. Example: 2h 50min + 1h 35min + 3h 40min = 6h 125min = 6h + 2h 5min = 8h 5min. For weekly payroll totals, add all daily hours and convert total minutes to additional hours.
Both mean the same thing in most contexts — the length of a time period. Elapsed time typically refers to past events (how long has passed since something started). Duration refers to the total length of a defined period. Both are calculated as End Time − Start Time.
